I am a 4th year Biology student conducting my Master's project in the Flashman Lab. During this project, I hope to contribute to the group's investigation of PCO enzymes in organisms outside of land plants and green algae. Specifically, my work will use biochemical methods to to verify the existence and function of PCO-like proteins in 3 species of red algae and 1 brown algae. This work will be complemented by in planta studies which will assess if theses PCO-like enzymes can complement a PCO-deficient phenotype in Arabidopsis. This is an exciting project, which can hopefully tell us a little bit more about the evolution of oxygen-sensing in eukaryotes. In the future, I hope to use the skills I will gain in this lab to explore how climate change will affect algal species and the ecosystems they are part of, in order to better protect coastal biodiversity.
