I got my Bachelor's degree in Biochemistry from the University of Southampton, followed by a D.Phil. at the university of Oxford in the Department of Cardiovascular Medicine. I moved to the Department of Chemistry, Oxford, for postdoctoral work with Prof. Chris Schofield FRS investigating the structure and function of human O2-sensing enzymes. This developed into an independent research programme investigating the mechanisms underlying oxygen-sensing properties with a Royal Society Dorothy Hodgkin Fellowship. While holding this Fellowship, I switched from studying human enzymes to studying novel oxygen-sensing thiol dioxygenases in plants. This led to a move to the Department of Biology at Oxford in 2022. I have received a L'Oreal Fellowship for Women in Science in 2011, the Wain medal of the University of Kent in 2018, and the RSC Norman Heatley medal in 2022. Besides science, I enjoy reading fiction and looking after two kids and a dog.
